Title

Barnes Farm, Battlesea Green.

Description

Barnes Farm Battlesea Green.

The family photographed is believed to be that of William Chambers. The 1901 census return shows him to be a 48 yr old Horseman on a farm with his wife Charlotte. His children are listed as James 19, Delia 17, William 14, John 12, Mary Ann 10, Phoebe 8 and Fred aged 4. By 1911 William is a Farm Bailiff, a widower but still resident in the same house. That census also records that he had 11 children - 8 of whom still survived.

Information from Pamela Merriott:-
"THE CHAMBERS FAMILY AT BARNES FARM, BATTLESEA GREEN
Photo (from a photocopy) of the Chambers family outside Barnes Farm 1897/8

1.  This was first given to us by Nicky Hadingham around 2004 before she moved away from Oakfields, Battlesea Green. Her partner, Brian, gave it to her.  Brian’s housemate had a workmate from Essex.  When Brian told the workmate where Nicky lived, he said he had ancestors who had lived at Battlesea Green and came up with this photo of Barnes Farm.

2.  Told to us 29th September 2005  by Mrs Vera Byford (nee Chambers) and her two daughters, Barbara and Margaret. Mrs Byford is 84. She is William and Charlotte Chambers grand-daughter.  She lives in Ipswich and so does Barbara. Margaret lives in Missouri.  They brought with them a photocopy of the same photo given to us by Nicky Hadingham. Neither she nor her daughters know the ‘workmate’ relative in Essex and were very surprised to find we already had a copy. They worked out, however, who he was likely to be but had no names to give us.

The ladies gave us much information  –
The photo is likely to have been taken 1897/98 as Fred (6) was born in 1897. Fred is Mrs Byford’s father.

Charlotte Chambers (8) is buried in Stradbroke churchyard.  There is another small, unmarked grave nearby. This is likely to be one of William (2) and Charlotte’s children. They had 11 children but only 8 survived.

The Chambers family moved from Stradbroke at the beginning of WW1, first to Southend, then into Framlingham, then to Layer near Hadleigh. (Hence the Essex connection ?)

There is still a direct-line relative living nearby, Robert Chambers of Horham, a great-grandson of William and Charlotte.

Mrs Byford remembers coming here to tea in the 1930s when Barnes Farm was owned by a Mr Frank Reid (Reed ?).  (He kept peacocks.)

Elizabeth Ellis (nee Chambers)

Hi. William Chambers is my greatgrandfather and I also have a copy of this picture in my possession. I am the grandaughter of his son William (14). William married Ellen Goodwin (Colchester) and moved eventually by end of WW1 to Nottinghamshire. His son was Stanley William Chambers,my father who had 8 children all married and  living across the world. I still live in Nottinghamshire

I am currently researching the family and would be interested in anyone with information to contact me
